BMW stands for
Bayerische Motoren Werke (Bavarian Motor Works), a premium German manufacturer that has grown from a humble aircraft engine producer into one of the world's most recognizable luxury brands. Based in Munich, the company is synonymous with engineering precision and "Sheer Driving Pleasure".
The company’s journey began in 1916 during World War I. Initially, BMW was formed through the merger and restructuring of several firms, most notably Rapp Motorenwerke and Bayerische Flugzeugwerke. Its first products were high-performance aircraft engines, such as the BMW IIIa, which was known for its reliability at high altitudes.
Following the Treaty of Versailles, which banned aircraft production in Germany, BMW had to pivot. They first shifted to making railway brakes and farm equipment before launching their first motorcycle, the R32, in 1923. The company officially entered the automobile market in 1928 by acquiring Fahrzeugfabrik Eisenach and producing the "Dixi," a small car built under license from Austin.
Looking ahead, BMW is transitioning toward a "circular economy" and fully digitalized mobility. Their upcoming generation of vehicles, dubbed the NEUE KLASSE (New Class), aims to redefine electric drivetrains and sustainable manufacturing to compete in an increasingly green global market.
